Microsoft·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Microsoft Data Scientist round that was basically one meaty coding/design question about org chart traversal. Not a bad experience but the edge case discussion at the end was where things got real.
  • You're given a flat list of employee-manager pairs representing a company hierarchy. Build a tree from it, then return all employees level by level from the top down. Also discuss your data structures, complexity, and how you'd handle bad input like cycles, duplicate roots, or missing managers.

“The tree-building part was fine, I used a hashmap to store children by parent id and found the root by looking for whoever had a null manager.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Microsoft system design round for a Data Engineer role. The whole session was basically one giant URL shortener question broken into every possible sub-problem you can imagine. Thorough is an understatement.
  • Design a highly scalable URL shortening service that converts long URLs into short links and supports redirection. Walk through the full architecture.
  • What APIs would you expose for creating a short link and resolving a short code back to the original URL? Include request/response shapes and status codes.
  • What would your data model look like for storing short links, and which type of datastore would you choose?
  • How would you generate short codes? Compare hashing the long URL versus encoding a globally unique ID, and explain how you'd ensure uniqueness under concurrent writes.
  • How do you guarantee global uniqueness of short codes across multiple instances and regions?
  • How would you use caching to keep redirect latency low? Talk through cache key design, TTL choices, and what happens on a cache miss.
  • How would you scale and partition the storage layer, and what consistency trade-offs are you making?
  • What operational concerns would you address, such as abuse prevention, observability, link expiration, and analytics?
  • If you use a hash of the long URL to generate the short code, how do you detect and handle hash collisions? Give at least two approaches and compare their trade-offs.

“This was the anchor question and it ate the entire session.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Microsoft coding screen, palindrome problem. Pretty standard but the follow-up about handling numbers without string conversion tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Write a function that checks if a given input (either a number or a string) is a palindrome.

“Started with the two-pointer approach, which felt solid.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Microsoft system design round for a software engineering role. The whole session was one big open-ended question about building a sports team recommendation system, and they really wanted you to drive the conversation across data, modeling, ranking, and scaling.
  • Design a recommendation system that suggests local sports teams to users, covering data ingestion, user and team modeling, ranking, and how the system scales.

“This question sprawls in every direction and that's kind of the point.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Did a system design and technical discussion round at Microsoft covering OOP principles and browser authentication end-to-end. Two pretty meaty topics back to back, and I felt more confident on one than the other.
  • Walk through how you would design class structures and assign responsibilities in an object-oriented system. How do you decide what goes in an interface versus a concrete class?
  • Explain how authentication works in the browser from start to finish, including cookies versus tokens, session management, and OAuth/OIDC flows.
  • What are the security risks of storing tokens in the browser, and how do cookie attributes like HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite help mitigate CSRF and XSS attacks?

“I started with interfaces and worked down, which felt right, but I fumbled when they pushed on how I'd handle shared behavior across classes that don't share a parent.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

May 2026
Virtual onsite at Microsoft for an Applied Scientist role with three interviewers who had pretty different backgrounds, some close to LLM work and some not. The format mixed research discussion, open-ended scenario problems, and a handful of behavioral questions. No gotcha trivia, which was a relief, but you really had to be comfortable shifting how you explained things depending on who was asking.
  • Walk us through your own research. What problem were you solving and why does it matter?
  • How would you approach building or diagnosing a system like X? Walk us through your thinking.
  • Tell me about a time you had to work across teams or communicate technical work to a non-technical audience.

“This sounds easy until you're mid-sentence and realize one of the interviewers clearly knows the subfield cold while another looks mildly lost.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Did a frontend design round at Microsoft where they asked me to redesign their company website. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't expecting for a technical role.
  • How would you redesign the company's main website to improve the user interface?

“I went straight into layout and visual hierarchy stuff, which felt right in the moment, but I think I should've started by asking who the site is actually for.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Applied Scientist interview at Microsoft that went deep on class imbalance, covering pretty much every angle you'd want to prep for. One meaty technical question but they really pushed on the tradeoffs and evaluation choices, not just the surface-level answers.
  • How would you handle a highly imbalanced classification dataset? Walk through your approach from data preprocessing to model evaluation and deployment considerations.

“This started fine.”

Microsoft·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

May 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Microsoft, pretty standard motivational question to kick things off. Nothing too wild but it made me realize I hadn't thought carefully enough about my own answer beforehand.
  • Why do you want to be a PM, and what parts of product management genuinely excite you?

“I rambled a bit.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Microsoft software engineer behavioral round, one question that sounds deceptively simple but has a lot of moving parts once you're actually in it.
  • Describe a situation where you had multiple viable solutions to a problem. How did you compare them, make a final call, and then communicate that decision to your team and stakeholders?

“This one tripped me up more than I expected.”
