OpenAI·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Interviewed for a SWE role at OpenAI and got a coding problem around credit systems, the kind of thing that sounds straightforward until you actually start modeling it out.
  • Given a sequence of events representing credit issuance and usage (where credits can expire or have usage constraints), write a function that computes the user's remaining credit pool and total available credits.

“I went straight to a linear scan approach, tracking each credit batch with its expiry and remaining balance.”

OpenAI·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
60-minute coding round for an ML Engineer role at OpenAI, focused entirely on NumPy. No high-level frameworks, just raw array math and making sure you actually understand what's happening under the hood.
  • Solve a NumPy array manipulation puzzle using only vectorized operations. No Python loops allowed.
  • Implement a fully-connected layer in NumPy, including both the forward pass and the backward pass.
  • Implement softmax and cross-entropy loss from scratch in NumPy, including the backward pass.
  • Implement batch normalization forward and backward passes from scratch.
  • Implement a basic optimizer update rule from scratch, such as SGD or Adam, in NumPy.

“The no-loops constraint is where people trip up.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
OpenAI system design round focused entirely on one meaty problem: a GPU credit system with expiry, consumption ordering, and refunds. It went deeper than I expected and the follow-ups on policy changes really tested whether I actually understood my own design.
  • Design a GPU credit system where users can be granted credits with expiry windows, consume credits for jobs (using nearest-to-expire first), check their usable balance at a given timestamp, and receive refunds when jobs are cancelled.
  • How does your approach change if the credit consumption policy changes, for example switching from nearest-to-expire-first to something else, or if the expiry semantics are different?
  • Compare the complexity and practical tradeoffs of using a heap, a sorted structure, or a bucketed-by-expiry layout for this credit system.

“I jumped straight to a min-heap keyed on expiry and it felt clean until they asked about balance queries.”

Got a coding question for an ML Engineer role at OpenAI that was basically a grid simulation problem with a twist. Pretty algorithmic, not much ML flavor to it, but that seems to be their style.
  • Extend a disease-spread grid simulation to include an immune cell type that can neither be infected nor transmit infection. Return the number of days until the grid reaches a stable state with no new infections.

“The immune cell addition sounds minor but it actually changes how you think about termination conditions.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at OpenAI for a software engineering role, focused entirely on leadership. One question, but it had a lot of surface area and I felt like I was scrambling to cover all of it.
  • Tell me about a leadership experience, either as a formal lead or an informal one like a tech lead, project lead, or mentor. Walk through the team size, how you set direction, how you helped people grow, how you dealt with conflict or underperformance, and what the concrete outcome was.

“This question is basically five questions stitched together and I did not handle that well.”

OpenAI·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at OpenAI and got hit with a product design question around an AI capability they actually have. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • OpenAI has text-to-music capabilities. How would you turn this into a product?

“I went straight to brainstorming use cases and kind of skipped the 'who is this actually for' step, which I regret.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral and leadership loop for a software engineering role at OpenAI. Covers a technical presentation, mission/AGI questions, conflict and failure stories, and a cross-functional round with a PM. Pretty thorough if you're not used to this kind of structured behavioral process.
  • Walk us through one of your projects using a slide deck. Be ready to go deep on architecture, trade-offs, failures, what you'd change, and what you personally owned.
  • Why do you want to work at this company specifically?
  • What's your perspective on AGI, and how do you think about the risks and impact?
  • Tell me about a time you made a significant mistake at work.
  • Describe a situation where you disagreed with a teammate or with leadership.
  • Tell me about a time you received really tough feedback or failed to deliver on something.
  • How do you work with product managers day to day, and how do you handle it when there's pushback on something you're proposing?

“This one is more stressful than it sounds.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at OpenAI for a software engineer role, 60 minutes on streaming media. Not a lot of detail to go on but it was a full-length technical session.
  • Design a streaming media system.

“60 minutes on this and I still felt like I barely scratched the surface.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Interviewed for an EM role at OpenAI and got a system design question about building a notification system. Pretty classic for this type of role but the scope they expected was broader than I anticipated.
  • Design a notification system.

“Went in thinking I'd cover the basics and move on but they kept pushing on scale, delivery guarantees, and how you handle things like rate limiting per user or per channel.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at OpenAI for a software engineer role, focused almost entirely on building a multi-tenant online IDE. The question was deep and wide, covering isolation, quotas, secrets, cold-start performance, and editor architecture. Left feeling like I only scratched the surface on half the topics.
  • Design a multi-tenant online IDE where users can write and execute code in the browser. How do you isolate compute, file systems, and network between tenants, and how do you enforce per-tenant resource quotas to prevent noisy-neighbor problems?
  • How would you handle per-tenant secrets and configuration in this kind of platform, where each org might have different environment variables, credentials, or runtime configs?
  • How do you scale the platform to support thousands of concurrent tenants while keeping sandbox cold-start times low?
  • Walk through the editor-side architecture at a high level. How does the language server protocol integration work, how do you sync files, and how do you stream terminal output back to the browser?

“This is where I spent most of the time and also where I fumbled most visibly.”
