Pinduoduo SWE interview threw an LRU cache design problem at me, pretty standard stuff for this type of role but the O(1) constraint is where people trip up if they haven't thought it through before.
  • Design an LRU cache data structure with get and put operations, both running in O(1) average time complexity.

“The question itself is fine if you've seen it before.”

Pinduoduo·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Behavioral round at Pinduoduo for a software engineer role. One question, but it had a lot of moving parts and the follow-ups were no joke.
  • Walk me through the hardest situation you faced on a project. What made it difficult, what did you do, and what came out of it?

“This is one of those questions that sounds easy until you're actually in it and realize you've been rambling for two minutes without a clear point.”

Pinduoduo·Software Engineer·Recruiter / HR Screen

This was an HRBP screening call for a Software Engineer role at Pinduoduo, separate from the recruiter screen. The HRBP went through my entire background with a fine-tooth comb, checking dates, titles, and reasons for leaving at every job. Less of a conversation, more of a verification exercise.
  • Walk me through your education history, including any time spent studying abroad. What schools did you attend, what did you study, and why did you choose each program?
  • For each role on your resume, what was your exact job title, your employment dates, your manager's name, why you left, and what was your biggest accomplishment there?
  • What is your current work authorization status, are you open to relocation, what is your notice period, and do you have any non-compete or IP agreements that could affect when or how you join?
  • What is your current compensation including base, bonus structure, and equity vesting schedule, and what are your expectations for the new role?
  • Can you provide references, and are you comfortable with us reaching out to them?

“More detailed than I expected.”

SQL interview for a data engineering role at Pinduoduo. One question, no written spec, just a verbal description and a blank canvas. Pretty low-key but the schema discussion added some back-and-forth I wasn't expecting.
  • Write a query to find users who have logged in on at least two distinct days.

“The actual SQL part wasn't bad.”

Pinduoduo software engineer round that was basically a 30-minute walkthrough of one project you've worked on, then a behavioral follow-up about the hardest thing you dealt with on that project. Pretty structured but not in a bad way.
  • Walk me through a project you've worked on: the team structure, the goals, the architecture including services and data flow, key technical decisions, and your specific role in it.
  • What was the toughest experience you had on that project, what made it hard, how did you handle it, and what did you take away from it?

“This is the kind of question that sounds easy until you're actually in it and realize you've been rambling about team org for five minutes and haven't touched the architecture yet.”

Short SQL/analytics question for a Data Engineer role at Pinduoduo. Just the one problem, nothing behavioral, felt more like a screening exercise than a full round.
  • Given a table of user login records, write a query to find the longest consecutive daily login streak for each user.

“Classic gaps-and-islands problem.”

Conversational round with a director-level person at Pinduoduo, focused almost entirely on my resume and past projects. Less of an interview, more of a 'walk me through your career' session, which sounds chill until you realize they go pretty deep on the specifics.
  • Walk me through one of your most impactful projects. What was the problem, how did you approach it, and what were the key technical decisions you made along the way?
  • What trade-offs did you consider during that project, and is there anything you would do differently now?
  • What was the measurable business impact of your work?
  • Where do you want to take your career from here, and what kind of work are you hoping to do next?
  • Why do you want to join this team specifically?

“This is the one I spent the most time on and still felt like I rambled.”

Two-part round at Pinduoduo for a software engineer role. First half was a coding problem around merging intervals, second half was a project walkthrough with follow-up questions. Nothing too wild but the resume deep-dive had some sharp follow-ups I wasn't fully ready for.
  • Given an array of intervals, merge all overlapping ones and return a list of non-overlapping intervals that cover the full input.
  • Walk me through your most relevant project and be prepared for follow-up questions on the technical and design decisions you made.

“Classic problem but they threw a twist on it.”

Pinduoduo SWE coding round with a card/poker logic problem. Pretty niche constraint handling required, not your typical leetcode grind.
  • Given 4 characters representing card ranks from an incomplete 5-card straight (one rank missing), find and return the missing rank. Aces can be low (A-2-3-4-5) or high (above King), and each rank is encoded as a single character where Ace is '0', 10 is 'T', and face cards are their initials.

“The encoding tripped me up more than the actual logic.”

Pinduoduo software engineer round focused entirely on past project experience, roughly 25 minutes of going deep on one or two projects with follow-ups at every layer. No leetcode, no system design whiteboard, just a sustained interrogation of things you've already built.
  • Walk me through a significant project you worked on: what was the problem, why did it matter, and how did you approach the architecture?
  • What alternatives did you consider when designing the system, and why did you rule them out?
  • What specifically did you contribute versus what your teammates handled?
  • What was the hardest technical challenge in the project and how did you resolve it?
  • What was the measurable impact of the project and how did you track it?
  • Looking back, what would you do differently if you were starting that project over today?

“This is where the whole interview lives or dies.”
