Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at Robinhood for a senior backend/infrastructure role. The whole session was basically one giant design question about building a trading platform, but they kept drilling into specific subsystems so it felt like five interviews in one.
  • Design the authentication and identity layer for a trading app. How would you handle login, MFA, and identity federation?
  • How would you implement KYC and AML checks in the user onboarding flow?
  • Walk through your encryption strategy for data at rest and in transit across the platform.
  • Design the user profile service. Focus on the data model, how you'd protect sensitive fields, and what access patterns you need to support.
  • Design the stock quote service. How do you serve real-time and historical prices at low latency, and what's your caching and CDN strategy?
  • How would you handle fan-out when many users are subscribed to the same stock ticker?
  • How would you design the order routing layer that sends trades to external brokers?
  • What infrastructure would you choose for this platform and why? Walk through your compute, storage, and streaming choices.

“I went straight to Cognito and they seemed fine with that, but the follow-up was about what happens when Cognito is the single point of failure.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at Robinhood for a software engineer role, focused entirely on building a stock order placement system from scratch. Pretty intense scope, they wanted you to cover basically everything from API design to reconciliation with external exchanges.
  • Design a stock order placement system that supports market, limit, and stop orders, routes them to external exchange APIs, and handles the full order lifecycle including fills, cancellations, and status updates.
  • How would you handle partial fills and reconciliation when an external exchange API times out or returns an ambiguous response?
  • Walk through your data model for orders, fills, and the ledger. How do you handle concurrent updates and ensure correctness?
  • What risk controls would you build into this system, and how would you monitor for anomalies in order flow?

“This was the whole interview, not just one question.”

Jun 2026
Robinhood data science interview with a product-strategy angle. Just one question but it required a pretty structured approach to evaluate a new feature, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Robinhood is considering launching fractional shares trading. How would you evaluate whether this is a good idea?

“I jumped straight into metrics and kind of skipped the 'should we even do this' framing.”

Jun 2026
System design round at Robinhood for a software engineer role. The whole thing was centered on one big problem: build a security audit and monitoring system from scratch. Dense topic with a lot of moving parts, and the conversation went pretty deep.
  • Design a security audit and monitoring system that captures sensitive operations across company services, supports querying for investigations, detects anomalies, and stores logs in a tamper-evident way without affecting the latency or availability of the services being audited.

“This is a meaty one.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Robinhood software engineer interview, got a tree/graph problem dressed up as a product feature which was a nice change from the usual abstract LeetCode framing. The follow-ups escalated pretty fast into system design territory so it wasn't just a coding exercise.
  • Given a list of referral pairs representing a directed acyclic graph, compute for every user the total number of direct and indirect referrals they have (i.e., descendant count in the referral tree).
  • How would you find the top 3 users by referral count efficiently after computing all the counts?
  • How would you handle very deep referral chains to avoid recursion depth issues?
  • Suppose this is a live production system where new referral edges are continuously added. Recomputing all counts from scratch on every insertion is too expensive. How would you support incremental updates?

“The product framing helped me see it as a tree pretty fast.”

Robinhood·Frontend Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Robinhood frontend system design round where I had to design a photo album app in the browser. The interviewer pushed hard on state normalization and avoiding duplicate sources of truth, which I was not fully prepared for. Solid question overall, lots of follow-ups.
  • Design a browser-based photo album application covering an album list page, an album detail page, and a photo info page. Walk through your component architecture, state management, and data model.
  • How would you handle real-time sync so that renaming an album on one device updates another open device within a few seconds?
  • Walk through the upload flow for photos, from when a user picks a file to when it appears fully processed in the album.
  • Where should sorting by city live, how does it compose with pagination, and what do you do with photos that have no city yet?
  • A user uploads 200 photos at once on a slow connection. How do you keep the UI responsive, bound concurrency, show per-file progress, and handle partial failures?
  • Two devices rename the same album within the same second. What does each device see and what gets persisted under your conflict resolution strategy?
  • Your WebSocket connection drops for 30 seconds during which a rename and three uploads happen. How does the client recover without a full page reload?
  • How would you render a grid of thousands of photo tiles without killing browser performance?

“I started with the three screens and mapped what data each one needed, which felt like a reasonable entry point.”

Robinhood SWE round that's half presentation, half interrogation. You bring a project, walk through it for about 30 minutes, then spend the rest of the time getting grilled on the technical decisions you made.
  • Walk us through a recent project: what problem you were solving, how you designed the system, the trade-offs you considered, and what your specific contribution was.
  • How did you ensure idempotency in your system so that retries don't cause duplicate side effects?
  • How did your design handle failures, partial writes, and consistency boundaries?
  • What would need to change in your design if the load increased by 10x?

“The architectural diagram saved me here.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Robinhood analytics engineer interview with a pretty gnarly SQL question involving edit logs and temporal filtering. The kind of problem where you think you have it and then realize you missed a condition halfway through.
  • Given a users table and a state-change edit log table (joined on id and shard), write a query to find users who: started with a state other than CA, had at least one edit log entry changing their state to CA before 2021-01-01, and whose current state is still CA as of that date. Return id, shard, and name.

“Three separate conditions and I kept collapsing two of them together in my head.”

PM interview at Robinhood with a self-assessment question about where you sit across the core PM competencies. Pretty introspective format, not what I was expecting going in.
  • Across these PM traits, engineering collaboration, execution, ideation and vision, design partnership, and metrics, which is your biggest strength and which is your biggest weakness?

“I fumbled this a bit because I tried to hedge on the weakness part instead of just owning something real.”

Robinhood·Frontend Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Robinhood frontend system design round built around a photo album app with three screens. No mockup was provided to me beforehand, which made the opening a bit rough. The round leaned hard into state management and data normalization fundamentals, more than I expected from a "design" label.
  • Design a photo album app given three UI mockups: an album list view, a single album page, and a photo detail page. How would you architect the frontend?
  • What APIs would you define to support this app? Walk through fetching albums and fetching photos.
  • How would you implement cross-device real-time sync for the album and photo data?
  • How would you sort photos by city, and then support sorting in descending order?
  • Walk through how you'd handle photo uploads from the client side.

“Starting without the mockups put me behind immediately.”
