Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Robinhood system design round for a software engineering role. One question, stock trading management system, and it goes deeper than you'd expect pretty fast.
  • Design a stock trading management system.

“This sounds broad until you realize how many moving parts there are.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
SQL technical screen for an Analytics Engineer role at Robinhood. One question, pretty involved, centered on filtering users based on historical state changes across two tables. The kind of problem where you think you have it and then realize there's a subtle edge case you almost missed.
  • You have two tables joined on (id, shard): user_info with current user state, and user_info_edit_log tracking every field change. Write a query to find all users whose state has always been 'CA' as of 2021-01-01, meaning their current state is 'CA' and the edit log shows no record of them ever being in a different state before that date. Return id, shard, and name.

“My first instinct was just to filter user_info on state = 'CA' and call it a day.”

Robinhood·Frontend Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Did a frontend coding round for Robinhood and it didn't go great. The question was a UI build with some state management decisions that I fumbled pretty badly in hindsight.
  • Build a 7-day weekly calendar UI where columns represent hourly time slots and rows represent days. Clicking a cell should open a dialog to add an event name.

“I went with two separate state objects: a 2D grid and an events list, then derived one from the other.”

Robinhood·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

May 2026
Robinhood product interview, one question about measuring customer satisfaction. Not a lot of context to go on but it felt like a pretty standard PM screen.
  • What metrics would you use to measure how satisfied customers are with the Robinhood product?

“I went with the usual suspects: NPS, app store ratings, support ticket volume, churn rate.”

Robinhood·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Robinhood Data Scientist interview with a SQL question centered on membership period filtering. Pretty straightforward if you're comfortable with date range joins, but the 'Gold' tier filter is a small wrinkle that could trip you up if you're moving fast.
  • Given a customer profile table with membership type and date range, and a transactions table, write a SQL query that returns all transactions made during a customer's active Gold membership period.

“The join on customer_id is obvious, but I almost forgot to filter membership_type to 'Gold' before worrying about the date range.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Robinhood Analytics Engineer technical screen, one meaty pandas question that took up basically the whole slot. The session bucketing logic sounds deceptively simple until you actually start coding it.
  • Given a CSV of user activity logs with columns including user_id, event_time, and topic, write pandas code to group each user's events into sessions where consecutive events are no more than 30 minutes apart. For each session, compute session_start, session_end (capped at last event time plus 30 minutes), the number of distinct topics, and the event count. Return a DataFrame sorted by user_id and session_start. Also discuss the trade-offs between a vectorized approach and groupby-apply.

“I started with groupby-apply because it felt natural, sort by event_time within each user group, compute time diffs, label session breaks with cumsum.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Robinhood software engineer round, basically a mini system design plus coding problem rolled into one. You're building a social payment system from scratch with validation logic and clean class structure. Not a leetcode grind, more like a design-your-own-bank-with-friends problem.
  • Design and implement a small social payment system that processes a list of string-based commands (user sign-up, friend requests, accepting friend requests, sending money, and deposits). Each command has its own validation rules. Output each user's final balance after all events are processed.

“This one is more involved than it looks.”

Robinhood·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Robinhood data scientist interview with a product analytics case focused on diagnosing a metric drop. Pretty standard fintech case but the layered follow-ups made it trickier than expected.
  • The share of new users who fund their account on day one has declined. Walk through how you'd systematically diagnose this, including what external and internal factors you'd look at, and what you'd explore if those all check out.

“I started by splitting the metric into numerator and denominator, which felt right, but then I kind of rambled through possible causes without a real structure.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Robinhood for a software engineering role, focused almost entirely on one big project deep-dive. They really wanted to get into the weeds on ownership, trade-offs, and how you handle people problems, not just what you shipped.
  • Walk me through a significant project you worked on. What was the scope, and which parts did you personally own?
  • What were the key trade-offs you considered on that project, and why did you make the calls you did?
  • Describe a time on that project when the schedule was extremely tight. How did you handle it?
  • Who else was on the project and what was each person's role?
  • How did you handle disagreements or conflicts with teammates or stakeholders during the project?
  • What was the timeline for the project and what were the major milestones along the way?
  • How did you define success for this project, and how was it actually measured?

“This is where I probably spent too long on context-setting.”

Robinhood·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Robinhood system design round for a software engineer role. The whole thing was one big open-ended problem about building a distributed job scheduler from scratch, and they really wanted you to drive the architecture yourself rather than just answer prompts.
  • Design a distributed job scheduling system that lets clients register tasks on a schedule and runs them reliably across a fleet of worker machines. Cover architecture, data model, scheduling logic, execution path, failure handling, and query APIs.
  • How do you guarantee a job is never double-run? Walk through the specific crash and network partition windows in your design where a duplicate could still slip through.
  • A worker gets network-partitioned but keeps running its container. Its lease expires and the watchdog re-enqueues a retry. How do you prevent two workers from concurrently executing the same job and corrupting external state?
  • At the top of the hour a large fraction of jobs all fire at once. How do you prevent this thundering herd from overwhelming your metadata database and worker fleet?
  • How would you handle per-job resource requirements without building a full bin-packing scheduler? At what point do coarse resource tiers stop being sufficient?
  • How would you extend this system to support job dependencies, where job B only runs after job A succeeds? Why is that a meaningfully different problem?

“This is a massive question and I did not scope it fast enough.”
