Roblox DS interview with a product analytics case focused on homepage tab experimentation. Pretty much one meaty question that covered a lot of ground: metric selection, experiment design, and statistical thinking all rolled into one.
  • Roblox is replacing an existing homepage tab with a new one. How would you evaluate the business impact of this change? Walk through your primary and guardrail metrics, your hypotheses, and design a full experiment plan including sample size, duration, segmentation, and success criteria.

“This question is deceptively wide.”

Roblox put me through over two hours of block-coding mini games before a 50-minute coding section, and the whole thing felt like a massive waste of time. The actual coding part was easier than the mini games, which makes the sequencing even more baffling.
  • Solve a series of Mars-themed logic problems using a block-based coding interface (similar to visual/drag-and-drop programming environments).

“This was genuinely maddening.”

Roblox software engineer coding round, one algorithmic problem about robot movement states. The question had enough edge cases to keep me honest.
  • Given a sequence of movement instructions for a robot, write an algorithm to determine whether the robot ends up in a valid recognized state. Your solution needs to handle edge cases correctly.

“Took me a bit to figure out what 'valid recognized state' even meant in context.”

Roblox DS interview with a single but very dense question that basically asks you to narrate an entire project lifecycle, defend your metric decisions under pressure, and handle a stakeholder conflict, all in one breath. Felt more like a written case study than a conversation.
  • Walk through an ads or growth analytics project you owned end-to-end under vague requirements and a tight deadline. Cover scope, stakeholders, success criteria you defined yourself, key technical decisions and trade-offs, how you resolved a conflict with Product or Sales, and quantify the impact. Then: if your primary guardrail metric dropped 0.7 percentage points while revenue went up 8%, what do you do and how do you communicate it?

“This is basically three questions stapled together and they want all of it.”

Roblox system design round focused entirely on scheduled payments. Pretty deep dive, they clearly wanted to see if you understood the messy parts like idempotency and failure handling, not just the happy path.
  • Design a payment system that supports scheduled payments, where a user submits a payment now but it executes at a future time.
  • How would you handle idempotency and exactly-once semantics if the scheduler fires the same payment twice?
  • How would you support cancellation or modification of a pending scheduled payment?
  • Walk me through failure handling: what happens when the payment gateway is down during execution?

“I started with the DB row approach since it felt safest, a table with an execute_at timestamp and a polling job sweeping it every few seconds.”

Roblox coding round, tree traversal problem. Pretty clean question but the pre-order tie-breaking detail is the kind of thing that bites you if you're not careful.
  • Given a tree (binary or n-ary), find the node at the greatest depth. If there are multiple nodes at that depth, return whichever appears first in pre-order traversal.

“The base problem is easy enough, just DFS and track depth.”

Roblox SWE interview with a rate limiter design question that started reasonable and then got pretty deep pretty fast. The follow-up about multi-dimensional buckets was where things got interesting.
  • Implement a rate limiter using a sliding window algorithm. The function takes a client ID and a timestamp and returns whether the request is allowed given a limit of N requests per W-second window. Walk through the sliding-window-log vs sliding-window-counter approaches and discuss the memory and accuracy trade-offs.
  • Extend the rate limiter to support multiple independent limit dimensions simultaneously, such as per API tier, per endpoint, or per user-endpoint pair. How does the data structure generalize, and how do you handle memory when most of those bucket combinations are rarely used?

“I went with the log approach first since it's more accurate, basically storing a sorted list of timestamps per client and evicting anything outside the window.”

Roblox software engineer interview with a question focused on data scale and infrastructure. Pretty technical, felt like they wanted real numbers not hand-wavy answers.
  • Walk me through the data scale your current team operates at. How big are the datasets, what's the throughput like, how is everything stored and processed, and what scaling problems have you run into?

“This one tripped me up more than it should have.”

Roblox system design round for a software engineer role, full deep-dive on building a real-time matchmaking service from scratch. Pretty intense scope for a single session.
  • Design a real-time matchmaking service for an online multiplayer game. Cover latency goals, fairness and skill balancing, regional constraints, APIs, data model, match formation logic, scaling strategy, consistency model, failure handling, and monitoring.

“This is a beast of a question.”

Did a system design round at Roblox for a frontend role and got completely wrecked by backend implementation questions I wasn't prepared for. Failed the round.
  • Design a real-time notification system.

“This was brutal.”
