Shopify·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Shopify ML engineer interview that went deep into data labeling from scratch. The question was a beast and I don't think I fully recovered after the first few minutes.
  • You need to build an ML model but have zero labeled data. Walk through how you'd define the label, collect it ethically and at scale, and validate that the data quality is actually good.

“This one sprawls in every direction and I wasn't ready for how wide it goes.”

Shopify·Product Manager·Onsite - Cross-functional / Panel

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Shopify, looks like it was a cross-functional role of some kind. Just the one question I can pull from what I wrote down, but it's a pretty telling one for how they think about collaboration.
  • How do you collaborate with developers and designers?

“Felt like a warmup but I think I underdelivered.”

Shopify·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
AI-assisted technical screen for a software engineer role at Shopify. The whole thing was built around reading and reasoning about AI-generated code rather than writing from scratch, which was a bit of a curveball.
  • Implement a Wordle-like word guessing game: given a dictionary of valid 4-letter words and a randomly selected target, accept up to 5 guesses from the user, reject invalid words without consuming a turn, and return a hint string for each valid guess where '1' means correct letter in correct position, '0' means correct letter in wrong position, and '-' means the letter isn't in the target at all.

“The hint logic is where I got tripped up.”

Shopify·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Shopify data scientist phone screen, done in a CodePad environment with a sample transactions table. One SQL question the whole time, but it had enough edge cases to trip you up if you weren't careful.
  • Given a transactions table with user IDs, revenue, and order dates, write a SQL query that returns each calendar week along with the percentage change in total revenue compared to the prior week.

“The DATE_TRUNC part was fine, that's muscle memory at this point.”

Shopify·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

A data science case question for Shopify focused entirely on marketplace measurement. One big open-ended prompt, no small warmup questions, just straight into the deep end.
  • Design a framework to measure the success of the Shopify App Store, covering north-star metrics, success metrics for merchants, developers, and Shopify, guardrail metrics, the data model you'd need, and how you'd evaluate a new ranking or recommendation feature.

“This is a lot.”

Shopify·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Shopify data scientist interview with a brutal all-in-one question set that covers basically your entire career, your read of their company materials, a mistake post-mortem, a compensation negotiation roleplay, and more. The prep burden here is real.
  • Walk us through your career from undergrad to now, calling out two major turning points and what drove each decision.
  • You've read our company brochure. Give three concrete insights from it and one respectful critique, then connect each to what you'd do in your first 90 days.
  • Describe a significant mistake you made at work in the last three years: what you misjudged, the earliest warning sign you ignored, the measurable impact, and what you changed systematically afterward.
  • What's your proudest professional achievement? Cover the core metric you were optimizing for, trade-offs you made, risks you cleared, and the before and after numbers.
  • Take us end-to-end through your most recent large project: scope, timeline with actual dates, which teams you coordinated with, a conflict you resolved, key risks and how you handled them, and how requirements shifted midway and what got cut or added.
  • Describe a time you delivered on a project without meaningful manager support. How did you get alignment and sponsorship, handle blockers you couldn't clear yourself, protect scope, and what written artifacts did you produce?
  • If the recruiter won't share a compensation range, how do you handle it? Walk through your strategy and say exactly what you'd say to keep things moving while still protecting your target number.

“They gave a 3-4 minute time box on this which sounds generous until you realize you have to hit specific dates, names, and outcomes.”

Shopify·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Shopify software engineering interview with a deep project deep-dive question. Pretty much the whole session was one long conversation about a past project, so come ready to talk through everything from the initial problem to what you'd change now.
  • Walk me through a project you led or made a major contribution to. Cover the problem, goals, scope, timeline, team, and stakeholders. Then go into your specific role, the technical decisions you made, the trade-offs involved, challenges you hit, risks you managed, how you measured success, what the outcome was, and what you'd do differently looking back.

“This is basically a 30-minute conversation disguised as one question.”

Shopify·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

May 2026
Shopify PM interview, just the one question about handling disagreements with other PMs. Short but the kind of thing that trips you up if you haven't thought about it.
  • If you and another PM had conflicting opinions on something, how would you handle it?

“I went with the obvious answer about aligning on data and getting stakeholders involved, but it felt a bit rehearsed coming out.”

Shopify·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Pair programming round at Shopify for an ML Engineer role. The whole session was collaborative coding under a timer, which adds a layer of stress I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • How do you approach pair programming in a timed interview setting, including how you clarify requirements, narrate your thinking, and handle task handoffs with your partner?
  • How do you manage nerves or communication friction, such as a language barrier with your partner, during a live collaborative coding session?
  • How do you ensure unit tests get written when you're under significant time pressure in a pair programming interview?
  • How do you adapt your collaboration style depending on whether your pair programming partner is very hands-on versus mostly passive?

“I spent the first couple minutes just asking clarifying questions out loud, which felt awkward but saved me from going down a wrong path.”

Shopify·Machine Learning Engineer·Recruiter / HR Screen

May 2026
Recruiter screen for an ML Engineer role at Shopify. Pretty standard stuff, mostly background and logistics questions, nothing technical yet. Left feeling like it was just a filter round.
  • Why did you originally pursue engineering, and how has your motivation shifted since then?
  • Walk me through your resume from start to finish, including what drove each job change.
  • What is your current work authorization situation, and will you need visa sponsorship at any point?
  • What are your compensation expectations, including base, equity, bonus, and location preferences?
  • Do you have any questions for me about the team, the role, or how the process works from here?

“Stumbled a bit here.”
