Shopify·Growth Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Shopify interview focused on merchant acquisition strategy across social platforms. Pretty lean on details but the one question they asked was meaty enough to chew on for a while.
  • How would you compare the effectiveness of Facebook versus Instagram for acquiring new merchants?

“I went straight to funnel metrics and audience segmentation, which felt right, but I spent too long on the obvious stuff like CPM differences and not enough on the actual merchant journey.”

Shopify·Data Scientist·Recruiter / HR Screen

May 2026
Shopify Data Scientist process with a recruiter screen that front-loads a lot of homework: five reading links sent 24 hours before the call, and they're explicit about wanting value alignment before anything technical. Long multi-round pipeline overall.
  • You have 90 minutes before an HR call and just received five links about the company's CEO philosophy and interview process. Walk through exactly how you'd use that time, what materials you'd produce, and how you'd split it between reading, synthesizing, and preparing counterpoints.
  • Draft a 5-minute opening statement for the HR call that includes three evidence-backed insights from the pre-read materials, one principled challenge to something the company claims, and two questions you'd ask HR to probe whether the culture actually matches what's on paper.
  • Define a personal go/no-go rubric with 3 to 5 criteria and concrete observable signals you'd use during the HR call to decide whether this role is actually a mutual fit.
  • The interview process has many rounds. Write a concise email to the recruiter proposing a condensed version of the pipeline, specifying which rounds you'd combine or replace, stating your non-negotiables, and outlining what you'd do if they push back.

“This one is more of a prep stress-test than a real question, but it revealed something about how Shopify thinks about candidates.”

Shopify·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Technical phone screen for a Data Scientist role at Shopify, one coding question the whole way through. Pretty focused session, no small talk, they just dropped the problem and watched what happened.
  • Write a Python function that computes cosine similarity between two strings, treating each string as a bag-of-words vector.

“I knew the formula going in but fumbled the implementation a bit.”

Shopify·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Shopify ML Engineer interview that threw a pretty gnarly taxonomy classification problem at me. The scope was wide enough that I wasn't sure if they wanted a full system design or just a modeling discussion, so I tried to cover both and probably spread myself too thin.
  • You're given a hierarchical tag system for products where tags overlap and have inconsistencies across levels. How would you design an end-to-end classifier for this taxonomy, covering label space definition, data cleaning, model architecture, loss function, thresholding, class imbalance, evaluation, latency, and monitoring?

“This was a lot to unpack in one question.”

Shopify·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Shopify PM interview with a product improvement question focused on new merchants. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully ready for.
  • How would you improve Shopify's product experience for new merchants who struggle to find products to sell?

“I went straight to feature ideas and kind of skipped over properly defining who these new merchants actually are.”

Shopify·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral interview at Shopify for a Data Scientist role, roughly an hour, structured around your career trajectory and how each step shaped you. Pretty conversational but they clearly wanted specifics, not vague reflections.
  • Walk me through your professional journey. What experiences pushed you to the next level, and what did each step teach you about taking on more responsibility?

“I rambled more than I wanted to.”

Shopify·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Shopify system design round that built on a previous coding exercise about rover movement. The question scaled that single-process simulator up to a million-plus active rovers on a shared grid, which was a lot to unpack in one session.
  • You previously built a single-process rover simulator. Now design a backend service that scales it to 1M+ active rovers on a shared grid, handling millions of movement commands per second while keeping positions collision-free and durable across failures.
  • How do you keep the one-rover-per-cell invariant when the two contending rovers live on different shards, and what happens when a move crosses a partition boundary?
  • A single doorway cell becomes a hotspot with thousands of rovers funneling through per minute. How does your design behave there, and how do you reduce contention without breaking the invariant?
  • If you need to re-partition a hot grid region at runtime, splitting it into two shards, how do you migrate ownership and in-flight reservations without stalling movement or dropping the invariant?
  • Reads can tolerate some staleness but writes must stay strongly consistent. How would you serve 100k+ dashboard reads per second without hammering the authoritative shards?
  • How would your design change if rovers could request multi-cell moves or reserve a short path ahead instead of moving one cell at a time?
  • How do you guarantee exactly-once application of a move command so a retried command after a crash doesn't move a rover twice?

“This was the core question and it's genuinely big.”

Shopify·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
ML system design round at Shopify for an MLE role, centered entirely on building a loan eligibility model for merchants. Pretty thorough scope, they wanted you to go from problem framing all the way through deployment monitoring without skipping anything.
  • Design an end-to-end ML system to decide whether to offer a loan to a Shopify merchant. Walk through your full approach from problem framing to deployment.
  • How would you define the target label for this model, and what label leakage risks do you need to watch out for?
  • What features would you use, and what data sources would you pull from?
  • Which model algorithm would you choose and why? What are the tradeoffs between logistic regression, gradient-boosted trees, and deep models for this use case?
  • How would you evaluate the model offline before deploying it?
  • What business metrics would define success for this product after launch?
  • How would you monitor the model in production and detect when it needs to be retrained?

“Big open-ended one.”

Shopify·Product Manager·Recruiter / HR Screen

May 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Shopify and got asked about e-commerce preferences, which felt more like a warmup than a real screen.
  • What is your favorite e-commerce store and why?

“Seemed like a casual icebreaker but I second-guessed myself halfway through my answer.”

Shopify·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Shopify data science interview with a meaty product analytics case built around a hypothetical app store launch. One question, but it had enough layers to keep me busy for a while.
  • Design a measurement plan for the launch of the Shopify App Store. What does success look like, what data do you need, over what time horizons, and how do you monitor and adjust after launch?

“This one sprawled fast.”
