Shopify·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
SQL-heavy take-home style question for a DS role at Shopify. The whole thing was one big multi-part problem around detecting pirated theme usage on their marketplace and quantifying the revenue hit. Pretty involved, lots of edge cases to think through.
  • Write a SQL query to produce a monthly trend table showing total active paid theme usages, pirated usages, number of pirating shops, and piracy rate for each month in 2023.
  • Write a SQL query to produce a monthly revenue impact table showing potential theme revenue lost, platform revenue from pirating shops, average platform revenue per pirating shop, and the percentage of total platform revenue those shops represent.
  • Write a SQL query to build a prioritization table showing the top 10 combinations of theme, subscription plan, and merchant vertical by potential revenue lost, including piracy counts and platform revenue from those shops.

“The core challenge here is generating the month spine first and then joining usage rows correctly.”

Shopify PM interview with a product design prompt around merchant returns. Single question, product sense focused, felt pretty open-ended in a way that was either freeing or a trap depending on how prepared you were.
  • How would you design a better returns experience for merchants on Shopify?

“I went straight into user segmentation which felt right at the time but I probably spent too long on it before getting to actual solutions.”

Shopify PM interview with two questions that sound straightforward until you're actually in the room trying to answer them without rambling.
  • If you noticed a drop in sales, how would you go about diagnosing the root cause?
  • How do you decide whether to build a new feature or not?

“I went straight into segmentation mode, which felt right, but I think I skipped over clarifying what 'sales' even meant to them.”

Shopify·Data Scientist·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Shopify data scientist interview that went deep on the full analytics stack, like uncomfortably deep. Every question felt like it was designed to see if you actually built these systems or just read about them.
  • Walk through your current analytics tech stack end-to-end, from ingestion to visualization, and for each layer justify your choice over two alternatives across cost, governance, scalability, latency, and self-serve ease.
  • Design a canonical event and experiment data model that supports trustworthy dashboards and ad-hoc queries, covering slowly changing dimensions, late-arriving events, idempotent backfills, and PII handling via tokenization and row-level security.
  • How do you design and maintain a metrics layer, including semantic definitions, versioning, change review processes, and ownership, and how does BI tooling pull from it to enforce a single source of truth?
  • Describe an automated data quality framework covering freshness checks, schema validation, and distributional drift detection, and outline a lightweight Python approach to catch breaking changes in metric definitions before they deploy.
  • How do you enable async collaboration in a remote data org around code review, approvals, data lineage, and incident runbooks, and how do you prevent metric definitions from drifting across different teams over time?

“This question ate up a huge chunk of the session.”

Jun 2026
Shopify product interview, one question about building a new tool for merchants. Short and open-ended, the kind of question that sounds easy until you realize you have no idea where to start.
  • If you were designing the next tool to help Shopify merchants succeed, what would you build?

“I went straight into solution mode and started pitching a feature before I'd said a word about which merchants I was even thinking about.”

Shopify·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
ML system design round at Shopify for an MLE role. The whole thing was one big open-ended problem about real-time product categorization at scale, and they went deep on basically every layer of the stack.
  • Design an ML system that categorizes product listings in real-time against Shopify's taxonomy of 10,000+ categories organized across 26+ business verticals. Listings come in as a stream with title, description, images, and attributes, and need to be assigned to taxonomy nodes within seconds.
  • How would you handle rare categories and class imbalance in this taxonomy classification setting?
  • Walk through the feature pipeline for this system, covering both text and image inputs.
  • Describe the streaming architecture connecting ingestion to model inference to storage.
  • How would you set up online evaluation and drift monitoring, and what's your retraining strategy when the taxonomy itself changes rather than just the data distribution?

“This is a beast of a question.”

Shopify data/analytics interview with a pretty involved SQL question about rolling averages over sparse session data. One round, one meaty problem, left me second-guessing my window function syntax for a while after.
  • For each shop and each day in a reporting period, return the daily session count along with a 7-day rolling average of session counts that excludes the current day. Days with zero sessions must still appear in the result and be factored into the rolling average.

“The zero-session days thing tripped me up more than I expected.”

Shopify data scientist interview built around a realistic e-commerce time-series scenario. The whole thing was one extended case study where new data gets layered in as you go, which I actually liked more than disconnected trivia questions.
  • You see a large spike in weekly sessions around May on a three-year time-series dashboard. What hypotheses would you generate for why that happened?
  • Conversion rate drops sharply at the same time sessions spike. How do you explain that pattern?
  • Walk through how you would validate this using the week-level data. The year_week field is stored as a string rather than a proper date. How do you handle that?
  • Your analysis shows the session spike is concentrated in specific shop types and almost entirely in sessions with duration of zero or under thirty seconds. What does that tell you, and what do you do next?

“I jumped straight to seasonality and marketing campaigns, which felt right but also kind of obvious.”

Shopify SQL round, one question, pretty focused on date handling which I didn't think would matter as much as it did.
  • Using only the sessions table, write a SQL query that returns session counts grouped by day, with columns (day, session_count) ordered by day. Handle the timestamp truncation and any timezone concerns appropriately.

“I jumped straight to DATE_TRUNC and felt pretty good about it, but then they asked how I'd handle timezones and I kind of stumbled.”

Interviewed for a PM role at Shopify, just the one question worth noting from what I remember.
  • What's an area you're actively working to improve?

“Pretty standard self-awareness question but I fumbled it a bit.”
