Vanta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
Vanta software engineer interview that was basically one big design-and-implement session. They gave me an in-memory logging service to build from scratch, then piled on a gnarly concurrency follow-up. Felt more like a systems mini-project than a typical coding round.
  • Design and implement an in-memory service that logs test run results with a log(test_id, timestamp, status) function, where status is either 'pass' or 'fail', and events arrive with strictly increasing timestamps across all test IDs.
  • Implement getMinPassTransition(test_id): return the minimum elapsed time for a test to go from failing to passing, where consecutive fail reports count as a single failure segment starting at the first fail. Return null if no complete fail-to-pass transition exists.
  • Add a getMaxConcurrentFailures(min_tests) function that finds the longest contiguous time interval during which at least min_tests distinct tests are failing simultaneously. Return an object with inclusive start and exclusive end timestamps, or null if no such interval exists. How do you handle tie-breaking and what are the complexity implications?

“The logging part itself was fine.”

Vanta software engineer interview with a data structures design problem that had a tricky follow-up. The main question was manageable but the follow-up on concurrent failures pushed into territory I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a data structure that supports logging test run results by test ID, timestamp, and pass/fail status (timestamps are globally increasing), and also supports querying the shortest time from the start of any contiguous failure block to the next passing result for a given test ID.
  • Extend the same data structure to support a query that returns the longest contiguous time interval during which at least a given number of distinct tests are simultaneously failing, with the end timestamp being exclusive.

“The logging part was fine, basically a map from test ID to an ordered list of events.”

Vanta software engineer interview with a pretty interesting coding problem around test run logging and failure tracking. Two parts to the same problem, and the second part was where things got tricky.
  • Implement a log(test_id, timestamp, status) function to record test runs where timestamps are strictly increasing across all test IDs. Then implement get_min_time_to_pass(test_id) that returns the minimum duration from the start of any consecutive failure streak to the next passing status, or null if the test never passes.
  • Using the same log() function, implement get_longest_failure_window(min_tests) that returns the start and end timestamps of the longest contiguous time window where at least min_tests distinct tests are failing simultaneously. Return null if no such window exists.

“The log part was fine, just needed a sorted structure keyed by timestamp globally.”

System design round at Vanta for a software engineer role, focused entirely on building a DAU/MAU tracking system. Pretty deep dive into the full pipeline from ingestion to querying, and the trade-offs got surprisingly specific.
  • Design a system to compute Daily Active Users and Monthly Active Users at scale, covering the full pipeline from event ingestion through deduplication, storage, computation, and historical querying.
  • What are the trade-offs between using HyperLogLog, bitmaps, and raw storage for user deduplication in a DAU/MAU context?
  • How would you handle real-time versus batch computation for DAU/MAU, and what are the accuracy and cost implications of each?
  • How would you design the storage and querying layer to support historical DAU/MAU lookups efficiently?

“This was basically the whole interview in one question.”

Vanta software engineering interview with a pretty meaty coding problem about a streaming test logger. The whole thing was one question with three parts, and the complexity ramps up fast by part three.
  • Design a streaming logger for test runs with globally strictly increasing timestamps. Implement three operations: log(test_id, timestamp, status) to record a test result, get_min_fix_time(test_id) to return the shortest duration from the start of a failing streak to the next passing status for a given test (or null if no such transition exists), and get_max_concurrent_failure_period(min_tests) to return the longest contiguous time window during which at least min_tests distinct tests are simultaneously failing (or null if none). Describe your data structures, algorithms, and time/space complexities.

“Part one was fine, just storing logs per test.”

Behavioral round at Vanta for a software engineer role, but instead of the usual 'tell me about a time when' format, they threw hypothetical scenarios at me and wanted me to reason through them out loud.
  • Given a specific hypothetical situation, how would you handle it? Walk through your reasoning, the principles guiding your decision, who the stakeholders are, and what trade-offs you'd be making.

“I kept waiting for them to ask about something I'd actually done, but they never did.”

Vanta system design round, one big question about building a DAU/MAU metrics pipeline at scale. The question had a lot of surface area and I don't think I covered all of it well, but it was a genuinely interesting problem to work through.
  • Design a system that computes and serves DAU and MAU for a large consumer app. Cover metric definitions, event ingestion, deduplication, accurate computation across time zones and late arrivals, storage and compute choices, dashboard serving, and monitoring.

“This one sprawls.”

Vanta coding screen for a software engineer role. One meaty implementation question that sounds easy until you start thinking about flags and streaming edge cases.
  • Implement the Unix `uniq` command. Given a stream of input lines, collapse adjacent duplicates into one line, and support the -c, -d, and -u flags.

“I got the basic dedup logic pretty fast but then the flags tripped me up more than I expected.”

Vanta software engineer interview with a tree-traversal problem involving employee groups. Pretty clean problem once you see the structure, but there's more to it than a first glance suggests.
  • Given a tree of employee groups (represented as a parent-to-children mapping) and a list of employees each with their group and overdue training days, compute for every group the total employee count and total overdue training days, including all nested subgroups.

“I started with a recursive DFS and it felt right pretty quickly.”

Did a virtual onsite for a Software Engineer role at Vanta. The system design portion focused on metrics around user activity, which felt pretty open-ended.
  • Design a system that tracks daily and monthly active users.

“Pretty classic metrics-tracking prompt but the scope can balloon fast if you're not careful.”
