Apr 2026
Zillow ML Engineer interview with a string parsing problem that looks deceptively simple. One question, linear scan, but the follow-ups about streaming and production invariants are where it gets interesting.
  • Implement a function that replaces placeholders in a string with values from a dictionary. Placeholders are delimited by percent signs, e.g. %key%, and if a key is missing from the dictionary the function should report an error. Aim for linear time complexity.

“Seemed straightforward at first and I jumped into code before thinking through the error case, which bit me.”

Zillow ML engineer interview, technical phone screen focused on model behavior fundamentals. One meaty question about hallucinations that covered a lot of ground. Felt like they wanted to see if you actually understood the mechanics or just knew the buzzword.
  • LLMs are known to hallucinate. Walk through why this happens, covering training objectives, model-level limitations, inference-time factors, and what techniques can reduce it in practice.

“This question is broader than it sounds and I kind of learned that the hard way.”

Interviewed for an MLE role at Zillow and got a coding question centered on streaming data and maintaining order statistics efficiently. Pretty standard for this kind of role but the design angle made it slightly more interesting than a pure leetcode grind.
  • Design a class that takes an integer k and an initial list of numbers, and supports an add(val) method that inserts a new value into the stream and returns the k-th largest element seen so far.

“The heap angle is pretty obvious once you think about it for a minute, keep a min-heap of size k and the top is always your answer.”

May 2026
Applied Scientist interview at Zillow that included a pseudocode design question around building an agent loop. Pretty technical and open-ended, which I wasn't fully expecting for the format.
  • Write a ReAct-style agent loop in pseudocode. The loop should cycle through Thought, Action, and Observation steps, show how the LLM prompt gets constructed each turn, how tool outputs get appended to the running trajectory, and how the loop eventually terminates (either via a final answer or a step budget limit).

“This one took me a second to get my footing.”

Zillow·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Zillow PM interview with a product strategy question framed around a different company. Pretty standard case-style format, one question, nothing too wild.
  • You're a PM at Airbnb. What would you pick as the company's north star metric and why?

“The company-swap framing threw me a little.”

Zillow·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Zillow EM interview with a classic system design prompt. Not much to report beyond the question itself.
  • Design Zillow's core platform (property search, listings, data aggregation, etc.).

“This is a meaty one if you've never thought about real estate data at scale.”

May 2026
Zillow ML engineer interview with a coding round focused on agent architecture. The prompt was pseudocode only, which I appreciated, but the scope was bigger than I expected for a single session.
  • Write pseudocode for a ReAct-style agent loop that alternates between reasoning steps and tool-calling actions, including state management and basic safeguards like max steps and error handling.

“The pseudocode-only part was a relief but I still overcomplicated the state structure early on.”

Zillow·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Zillow PM interview with a product strategy question framed around a competitor. Pretty standard round but the cross-company angle made it a bit more interesting to think through.
  • Define a north star metric for Airbnb.

“Spent the first minute second-guessing whether to anchor on supply, demand, or some combined engagement signal.”

Interviewed for an MLE role at Zillow and got a coding question that was more algorithmically dense than I expected for that title. One problem, but it had enough follow-up angles to keep you busy for the whole slot.
  • Given an array of integers, find the maximum value of (min + max) across all contiguous non-empty subarrays. Aim for better than O(n^2) time.

“My first instinct was brute force, enumerate every subarray, track min and max, done.”

Zillow·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round for a bizops role at Zillow. Just one question from what I can tell, focused on their 'Include and Empower' core value. Pretty standard culture-fit territory.
  • Describe a situation where you embraced a new or unfamiliar way of thinking.

“This is basically a culture value question dressed up as a behavioral one.”
