Amazon·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Amazon SWE coding question, pretty basic on the surface but they layered on follow-ups that made me think twice about my initial approach.
  • Given a list of integers, print every odd number. Follow-ups: how does your solution handle negative numbers, and what if some values exceed 32-bit integer range?

“I jumped straight to the modulo check and felt good about it, but the negative number follow-up tripped me up for a second.”

Amazon SWE coding challenge that was basically one meaty polynomial expansion problem. No behavioral stuff mentioned, just the algorithm.
  • Given a string representing a polynomial expression with two parenthesized factors (e.g. "(2x^2+4)(6x^3+3)"), expand and simplify it into a single polynomial string sorted from highest to lowest exponent, with no spaces or parentheses.

“This one looks manageable until you sit down and actually try to parse the string.”

Amazon system design round, just one question but it went pretty deep. MoE routing is not something I had studied closely and it showed.
  • Explain how the router in a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture works.

“I knew the surface level stuff, like experts are subnetworks and only some get activated per input.”

Amazon SWE coding round with a networking/algorithms problem. Nothing too wild but the CIDR stuff tripped me up a bit since I hadn't touched IP math in a while.
  • Given a list of firewall rules in CIDR notation where each rule either allows or denies an IP range, write a program to determine whether a given IP address is allowed or denied. The first matching rule wins. Handle edge cases like no matches and overlapping ranges.

“I knew what CIDR was but converting the prefix length to a bitmask on the fly under pressure is a different thing.”

Amazon SWE interview with a DP coding question. Not much detail shared but the problem was apparently a known LeetCode-style problem worth knowing cold.
  • Solve a dynamic programming problem (specific LeetCode problem referenced but not named).

“Standard DP problem, the kind that shows up enough that you really should just know it.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Apr 2026
Took the Amazon SDE online assessment for the 2026 grad cohort and it did not go well. Two questions, zero test cases passed, and the second one involved Django debugging with an AI assistant built into the platform, which was a combo I was completely unprepared for.
  • Algorithmic coding question where the provided instructions referenced variables and functions that didn't match the actual starter code.
  • Debugging a comment algorithm in a Django codebase, with an AI assistant integrated into the environment to help.

“The mismatch between the problem description and the actual code threw me off more than the problem itself.”

Amazon security engineer interview, one question that sounds deceptively soft but actually puts you on the spot fast.
  • When you hit a problem you don't have the answer to, how do you figure it out?

“I rambled a bit.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Amazon SWE behavioral round, just one question about GenAI experience. Pretty short session from what I can tell.
  • Can you describe your experience working with generative AI tools or technologies?

“Didn't expect this to come up in a behavioral round but it makes sense given where everything is heading.”

Apr 2026
Amazon Data Scientist online assessment, SQL section. Pretty standard stuff but the monthly revenue aggregation tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Given an orders table and an order_items table, write a SQL query that shows each calendar month in 2023 alongside the total revenue for that month.

“Knew I needed a join and a group by but I second-guessed myself on whether to filter by year before or after the join.”

Amazon SWE interview that included a Gen AI behavioral question about personal experience using AI tools. Pretty light on details but worth noting for anyone prepping.
  • Tell me about a time you used AI tools in your work. What was the experience like?

“Wasn't expecting a straight-up Gen AI question in a behavioral round.”
