Maven Clinic·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Maven Clinic system design question focused on a paginated listing problem with a diversity constraint. Single question, pretty deep, took up most of the session.
  • You have a pre-sorted list of clinic records (each with a payer_id, listing_id, rating, and other fields). Paginate them into pages of x items, maximizing payer_id diversity per page so the same payer doesn't appear twice on a page if avoidable. Describe your algorithm, its time complexity, and how you handle the edge case where one payer has more records than remaining page slots.

“I went with a greedy approach: iterate through the sorted list and fill each page slot with the next record whose payer_id isn't already on that page.”

Maven Clinic·Backend Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at Maven Clinic for a backend role. The whole thing was focused on building a therapist marketplace, which sounds straightforward until you start pulling on the HIPAA thread and the matching logic gets complicated fast.
  • Design a marketplace system that matches patients with therapists, covering the full flow from intake and profile setup through ranked recommendations, booking, messaging, and reviews.
  • How would you handle HIPAA and PHI compliance in this architecture, including audit logging?
  • How would you prevent double-booking when multiple patients try to book the same therapist slot at the same time?
  • Walk through your approach to the matching and ranking logic, specifically how you'd combine hard filters with softer scoring signals like specialty fit or past outcomes.
  • How would you keep therapist availability data fresh and consistent across the search index and the booking system?

“This is a big one and I spent probably too long on the intake form side before they nudged me toward the matching engine.”

Interviewed for a software engineer role at Mavenclinic and got a scheduling/interval problem with a twist I didn't fully anticipate. Pretty straightforward coding round but the break_time wrinkle added enough complexity to make me second-guess my initial approach.
  • Given a list of appointment intervals in HHMM format and a mandatory minimum break time between consecutive appointments, write a function that returns true if a person can attend all appointments without overlap or insufficient gaps.

“My first instinct was to sort by start time and check for overlaps, which is the standard interval problem.”

Maven Clinic·Backend Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Coding round for a backend engineer role at Mavenclinic. The main problem was a pagination algorithm for provider listings, which sounds deceptively manageable until you get into the edge cases, and then they pushed into complexity analysis and two follow-ups that required pretty different thinking.
  • Build a function that paginates a pre-sorted list of telehealth provider listings into pages of size 5, ensuring at most one listing per provider per page when possible, preserving original order, and allowing provider repeats only when needed to fill a page.
  • What is the time and space complexity of your pagination algorithm?
  • How would you modify the algorithm if high-scoring providers were allowed to appear more than once on the same page?
  • How would you implement a memory-efficient streaming version of this algorithm for roughly 150 million listings that don't fit in memory?

“The core logic isn't hard to describe but I fumbled the implementation a bit.”
