Meta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Interviewed at Meta for a software engineer role, and the only thing I can say for certain is that LeetCode 229 came up.
  • Given an integer array, find all elements that appear more than n/3 times.

“Classic majority vote problem extended to two candidates instead of one.”

Went through a coding round at Meta for a software engineer role. Just the one problem but it had enough edge cases to keep me honest.
  • Given an absolute Unix-style path string, return its simplified canonical form.

“I knew the stack approach pretty quickly, split on slashes, skip empty strings and dots, pop on double-dots, done.”

Meta SWE interview with two back-to-back tree problems on a BST. Both questions had meaningful follow-ups baked in, so it wasn't just 'code this' but also 'explain your choices and complexity.' Felt like a solid technical screen.
  • Given the root of a BST, implement vertical order traversal. Assign column 0 to the root, -1 to left children, +1 to right children. Return node values column by column left to right, top to bottom within each column, with ties broken by left-to-right position at the same depth. Walk through your algorithm, the data structures you'd use, and the time/space complexity.
  • Convert a BST into a sorted non-circular doubly linked list in-place, reusing the existing nodes so that each node's left pointer becomes its prev and right pointer becomes its next. Return the head of the list. Compare recursive and iterative approaches, discuss edge cases like empty trees, single nodes, and skewed trees, and analyze time and space complexity.

“I went with a BFS approach, tracking (node, col, depth) tuples and dumping everything into a map from column to list of (depth, value) pairs.”

Meta Data Engineer technical screen, one SQL question that looked manageable until I actually had to write it out. The join logic wasn't bad but getting the percentage calculation right in a single query took more mental gymnastics than I expected.
  • Given a copies table (with copy_id and condition) and a checkouts table (with copy_id, checkout_date, return_date, and renewal_count), write a single SQL query returning two columns: the count of active checkouts for copies in 'good' condition, and the fraction of those active checkouts where renewal_count exceeds 2.

“I joined the two tables on copy_id, filtered for condition = 'good' and return_date IS NULL, then used COUNT(*) for the first column.”

Meta SWE coding round with two back-to-back algorithm problems. Nothing too exotic but the combination in one session kept things moving fast.
  • Implement a fast exponentiation function that computes x to the power of y in O(log y) time.
  • Given a list of n integers and a value k, find the k largest numbers from the list.

“The log y part is the hint they're basically handing you.”

Meta coding round, one problem, the whole thing was basically a deep dive on a single array question. Felt okay during it but realized afterward I probably rushed the complexity analysis.
  • Given an integer array and a target value T, count the number of contiguous subarrays whose elements sum to T. Your solution must run in linear time. Also explain how your approach handles negative numbers, edge cases like T = 0, and an empty prefix.

“I knew the prefix sum trick going in, which saved me.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Meta SWE coding round with a sliding window / two-pointer problem that required both a working solution and a complexity analysis on the spot. Pretty standard algorithmic interview but the requirement to also write test cases with large inputs added a bit of pressure.
  • Given an integer array and an integer k, find the minimum length subarray where the difference between the maximum and minimum values is at least k. Implement the function, analyze its time complexity, and provide at least three test cases including arrays up to length 10^5.

“The core idea clicked pretty fast for me, you want a sliding window but maintaining the running min and max efficiently is where it gets annoying.”

Meta SWE coding round, two-part question on pathfinding. Part A was a clean BFS warmup, Part B was where things got interesting and a bit messy for me.
  • Given an m×n binary grid where 0 is open and 1 is an obstacle, find the shortest path from the top-left to the bottom-right cell using four-directional movement, returning -1 if no path exists. Describe your algorithm, prove correctness, and analyze time and space complexity.
  • You control a robot in an unknown finite 2D room with walls and obstacles. Using only move(), and optionally turnLeft()/turnRight() and atTarget(), design an algorithm to explore the room, find the target, and return the minimum number of steps from the start. Address coordinate tracking without a map, backtracking, optimality of the step count, and complexity in terms of reachable cells R.

“BFS, straightforward.”

Meta product design interview, one question about building an AR/VR experience for users over 50. Pretty open-ended and I wasn't totally sure how deep to go on the accessibility angle versus the actual product vision.
  • Design an AR/VR product for people over the age of 50.

“My first instinct was to go straight to health and wellness use cases, which in hindsight felt a bit predictable.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Meta system design round for a software engineer role, basically a full-on deep dive into designing something like Instagram from scratch. They wanted everything: storage, CDN, feed ranking, sharding, the works. It was a lot to cover in one session.
  • Design a photo and short-video sharing platform similar to Instagram, covering the full system from functional requirements through to capacity estimates.
  • How would you handle feed generation and ranking for a social platform at scale, and what consistency model would you apply to the timeline?
  • Walk through your media handling and CDN strategy for a platform serving billions of images and videos globally.
  • How would you design the sharding and replication strategy for the core data stores in this system?
  • What are your back-of-the-envelope estimates for QPS, storage, and bandwidth for a system at Instagram's scale?
  • How would you approach rate limiting and abuse prevention for a platform like this?
  • How would you design the notifications system, and what trade-offs exist between push and pull models?
  • What observability and disaster recovery strategies would you put in place for this platform?

“This was basically a marathon question.”
