Applied Scientist interview at Microsoft that was essentially one extended technical deep-dive into a past research project. The whole thing felt less like a conversation and more like a defense, they really wanted to poke holes in every decision you made.
  • Walk through a past research or ML project in full technical depth, covering motivation, problem formulation, your method choices, datasets used, and how you evaluated results. Be ready to defend low-level implementation details and explain your ablation study design, including which variables you ablated, why you chose those, what the results showed, and whether it changed your conclusions.

“This one took up basically the whole session.”

Got a system design question for a data engineering role at Microsoft, basically just one prompt about building a data warehouse schema for a payments company. Short and to the point, not much else to report.
  • Design a data warehouse schema for a payments platform similar to Stripe.

“This is the kind of question where you can go a hundred different directions and that's sort of the problem.”

A deep technical discussion round at Microsoft focused entirely on Azure Storage internals. No coding, just architecture talk, and they went pretty far into the weeds on replication and write paths.
  • Walk me through the overall architecture of Azure Storage. How do the metadata and data layers relate to each other?
  • How does Azure Storage handle replication within a single stamp versus across geographic regions? What are the durability guarantees in each case?
  • Describe the write path from client request all the way down to the extent layer. When does the client get an acknowledgment?
  • How does the read path work? What caching layers exist and how does replica selection happen when there's replication lag?
  • What are the trade-offs between synchronous and asynchronous replication in a storage system like this? How does batching factor in?

“I knew the high-level split between the partition/stream managers and extent nodes but fumbled a bit explaining how they actually interact at runtime.”

Interviewed for a SWE role at Microsoft, just the one question about mission fit. Pretty standard stuff, nothing technical.
  • Why do you think you would be a good fit for Microsoft's mission?

“Fumbled this a bit because I hadn't really thought about it beyond the surface level.”

Microsoft SWE interview with a DP problem that sounds deceptively clean on paper. The core challenge was trickier to model than I expected.
  • A founder wants to meet as many investors as possible. Each investor has a set of available days. The founder can choose at most k days total, meets at most one investor per day, and each investor can only be met once. Find the maximum number of investors the founder can meet. Solve this using dynamic programming.

“I spent way too long trying to think of it as a greedy problem before the interviewer nudged me toward DP.”

PM interview at Microsoft with a single product strategy question about Skype. Pretty open-ended, no hints on scope or direction.
  • How would you grow revenue and market share for Skype?

“I went straight to the consumer side and kind of ignored enterprise, which in hindsight was probably the wrong instinct given Microsoft's positioning.”

Microsoft ML engineer coding round, one question: implement K-means from scratch. Pretty much the whole session.
  • Implement K-means clustering from scratch.

“Classic question but there's more surface area than you think.”

TPM interview at Microsoft focused on experimentation design for Bing. Just one question but it had real depth to it, more of a product thinking exercise than a technical one.
  • You're designing an A/B test for Bing. When would you run a user-tied experiment (where users are consistently in treatment or control) versus an untied experiment (where each individual search is randomly assigned)? Walk through the tradeoffs of each approach.

“I knew the basic definitions but fumbled a bit articulating the actual tradeoffs.”

Microsoft PM interview with a government product design question. The question was meaty and had two distinct parts, which I didn't fully appreciate until I was already halfway through answering the first one.
  • You've been brought in to design the CoWIN vaccination portal for the Indian government. What features would you prioritize for partner personas, and what metrics would you use to measure the platform's success? How would those metrics differ across different user types?

“The partner persona angle is what tripped me up a bit.”

Microsoft SWE interview with a BST deletion problem. Pretty standard coding round, nothing too wild, but the edge cases will get you if you're not careful.
  • Given a binary search tree, write a function to delete a node with a given key and return the updated tree.

“The basic delete is fine but I fumbled on the case where the node has two children.”
