Interviewed at Asana for a product management role. Just one question from what I can tell, but it was a weird one that stuck with me.
  • If you were writing a book about product management based on your career, what would you title each chapter?

“I froze for a second because it sounds fun until you realize they're asking you to basically narrate your entire PM philosophy in a creative wrapper.”

Asana PM interview with a classic product design question. Pretty short on details but the question itself is deceptively open-ended.
  • How would you design a refrigerator for an office environment?

“I went straight to users and use cases, office workers with different schedules, shared space frustrations, food theft drama.”

Product design question at Asana for what felt like a mid-level PM role. One question, open-ended, lots of room to go wrong.
  • You're at a well-funded startup. How would you design a video application for kids?

“I jumped straight into features and had to backtrack when I realized I hadn't defined who 'kids' even meant.”

Got a product design question at Asana that was framed around Amazon of all things. Single question, fairly open-ended, and the whole thing hinged on whether you could connect UI decisions back to a business hypothesis rather than just making something pretty.
  • Redesign the Amazon Wishlist UI in a way that tests whether users who share wishlists more frequently drive higher revenue.

“I spent way too long on the UI side and not enough tying it back to the actual hypothesis.”

Asana PM interview with a single product design question. Pretty open-ended, which sounds fun until you're actually sitting there trying to figure out who the user even is.
  • How would you design a ClassPass-style product for children?

“My first instinct was to just map ClassPass one-to-one onto kids and call it a day.”

Interviewed at Asana for a product management role. One question, pretty standard PM leadership territory, but it made me think more than I expected.
  • How do you get your team bought into a product vision and keep them motivated around it?

“I rambled a bit on this one.”

Interviewed for a PM role at Asana and got hit with a product design question that was way more open-ended than I expected. Short round, one big question, left feeling like I either nailed it or completely missed the point.
  • Design an on-demand laundry service app, similar to how Uber works for rides.

“I spent the first minute just mapping out who actually uses this: busy professionals, people without in-unit washers, maybe college students.”

Interviewed for a PM role at Asana, got a prioritization question that sounds straightforward until you're actually in the seat trying to answer it.
  • As a PM, how would you prioritize improving product performance versus building new features?

“I went straight to impact framing and talked about user retention signals tied to latency, which felt right in the moment.”

Asana PM interview, got a product metrics question dressed up in a silly wrapper. Pretty standard underneath the cat gif framing.
  • You're building CatGifs.com. How would you measure the site's performance?

“The cat gifs thing threw me for a second because I kept trying to make it mean something deeper.”

Product sense interview at Asana centered on designing social features for Stitcher. The prompt was open-ended and pushed hard on tradeoffs and metrics, which I wasn't fully ready for.
  • What new feature would you build to add social capabilities to Stitcher? Define your goals and target users, and walk through the alternatives you considered before landing on your choice.
  • How would the feature actually look and work? Walk through the user experience, ideally with a rough wireframe or visual description.
  • What are the tradeoffs and risks of the feature you proposed, and how would you measure whether it's actually successful? Can you think of a scenario where the feature gets used a lot but you'd still consider it a failure?

“I spent too long on the brainstorming list and not enough time actually justifying why I picked what I picked.”
