Meta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Meta SWE coding round with a tree traversal problem. Pretty standard algorithmic stuff but the column ordering logic tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Given a binary tree, implement a function that returns node values grouped by vertical column, ordered left to right and top to bottom within each column.

“The example looks simple enough until you actually sit down to implement it.”

Did a technical screen at Meta, pretty standard networking fundamentals stuff. One question on TCP vs UDP, nothing too wild.
  • What are the differences between TCP and UDP?

“Went through the usual points: TCP is connection-oriented, has handshake, guarantees ordering and delivery.”

Meta·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Meta data scientist interview with a meaty probability/Bayes question built around a social network abuse scenario. The whole thing was one extended problem that kept branching into follow-ups, so you had to stay on your toes for a while.
  • Given that 5% of users are classified as bad and each bad user sends 10 times more friend requests than a good user, what is the probability that a randomly chosen friend request came from a bad user?
  • Using only existing event logs, how would you design a method to identify which users are likely bad actors?
  • If you have additional features like request timing and acceptance rate, how would you use Bayes' theorem to derive the probability that a user is good given that they sent a request?
  • If you needed to shrink the confidence interval of your probability estimate to one-tenth its current width, what would you change about how you collect or analyze the data?

“This is a straight Bayes calculation but I fumbled the setup for a minute because I kept second-guessing the base rate.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Interviewed for a finance strategy role at Meta, just the one behavioral question from what I can tell. Pretty standard stuff but it made me think more than I expected.
  • Can you describe a time you proactively sought direct feedback from a manager or senior leader, and what prompted you to do it?

“I had a decent example ready but I fumbled the 'why' part.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Meta system design round focused entirely on building an agentic AI system for automated ticket investigation. Pretty open-ended prompt with a lot of surface area to cover, and I felt the pressure of not knowing which parts they cared about most.
  • Design an AI-powered agentic system that automatically investigates support and engineering tickets, from reading and classifying the ticket to gathering evidence, diagnosing root cause, recommending resolutions, and optionally executing safe remediation steps while keeping humans in the loop for risky actions.

“This is a beast of a question.”

Phone screen for a software engineer role at Meta. Not much to go on from this one, just a single coding problem and that was pretty much it.
  • Validate a binary search tree.

“Classic BST validation problem.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Product sense and analytics heavy interview at Meta for a PM role. Three questions, all focused on data, metrics, and debugging. Nothing behavioral, which surprised me a little.
  • What kinds of data should Google Maps be collecting to support and improve real-time traffic features?
  • What would your north-star metric be for Facebook Live, and what supporting metrics would you track alongside it?
  • Messenger engagement has suddenly dropped. Walk through how you'd investigate and diagnose what's happening.

“I started with the obvious stuff, GPS speed signals from phones, and the interviewer just kind of waited.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Went through what felt like a behavioral-heavy loop for a PM role at Meta. Four questions, all the classic 'tell me about a time' format but some of them had real teeth. Left feeling okay about it but not great.
  • Tell me about a professional failure and what you learned from it.
  • Describe a time you proposed an idea that your entire team pushed back on. How did you handle it?
  • What is your biggest professional success and why do you consider it that?
  • Have you ever faced a data ethics dilemma at work? Walk me through what happened and what you did.

“I had a story ready but second-guessed it halfway through and pivoted to a safer, blander example.”

Meta SWE coding round, one question on merging two sorted interval lists. Pretty clean problem but the edge cases around touching endpoints tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Given two sorted, internally non-overlapping lists of closed integer intervals, merge them into a single sorted list of non-overlapping intervals covering the union of all input intervals. Intervals that overlap or share an endpoint must be combined.

“My first instinct was to just concatenate both lists and run a standard merge pass, which is basically right, but I fumbled the touching-endpoint condition.”

Meta coding round, tree problem that looked straightforward until the indentation part threw me off a bit. Variant of a classic problem but with enough of a twist to keep you honest.
  • Given the root of a binary tree, print every root-to-leaf path such that each node in the path is indented based on its column position (left children decrease the column offset by one, right children increase it by one).

“I knew it was a DFS path problem the second I read it, but the indentation requirement made me second-guess my approach for a minute.”
