FAANG / Big Tech

Most of these NVIDIA write-ups come from Software Engineers (137), then Product Managers (15) and Data Scientists (10). The most reported rounds are the technical phone screen (106), the system design round (28), the hiring manager screen (13) and the product sense round (13).

Apr 2026
NVIDIA software engineer interview that leaned heavily into product thinking, which I was not expecting. Most of the session was about defining and measuring usability for different product types, way more PM-flavored than I anticipated for an SWE role.
  • Beyond latency and accuracy, what other product qualities do engineers typically care about?
  • If an engineer tells you a new feature improves usability, what questions would you ask to validate that claim?
  • Define concrete usability metrics and how you'd measure them for a consumer streaming platform.
  • Now define usability metrics for a developer-facing framework or tooling product.

“Started fine, rattled off things like reliability, scalability, maintainability, cost.”

Nvidia SWE interview with a system design question. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully expecting for something that sounds so simple on the surface.
  • Design a system for a rock paper scissors game.

“My first instinct was to treat this like a toy problem and just sketch out some classes.”

System design round at NVIDIA for a software engineering role. The question was deep and very GPU-infrastructure-specific, which makes sense given the company but still caught me off guard with how many layers they wanted covered.
  • Design a Docker-based CI environment for running automated graphics tests on machines with NVIDIA or AMD GPUs. Cover base image choices, driver and runtime management, image layering and caching, reproducibility, security constraints, debugging inside containers, flaky test handling, and strategies to measure and reduce overall CI runtime.

“This was a beast of a question.”

NVIDIA systems-level interview, focused on low-level C++ string internals. One question but it had some depth to it.
  • In a custom string class constructor that uses strncpy to copy bytes, how would you speed up that copy operation? Why is memcpy a better choice when you already know the source length and the memory regions don't overlap?

“This one tripped me up a bit because I kept thinking about it from a correctness angle instead of a performance angle.”

NVIDIA software engineer interview with a pretty focused algorithmic problem. The whole session revolved around one meaty coding question with a lot of follow-up discussion on edge cases and complexity, which honestly felt more like a deep-dive than a typical coding screen.
  • Given an integer array and a target value T, implement a function that finds all unique triplets summing to T. The solution should use sorting and a two-pointer approach for O(n^2) time, avoid duplicate triplets, return results in lexicographic order, and use O(1) extra space beyond the output. Be prepared to discuss edge cases and test cases.

“I knew the classic 3Sum variant but having a custom target T threw me off for a second because I kept second-guessing whether my duplicate-skipping logic still held.”

Nvidia SWE interview with a system design question about building an agent that reacts to real-world context. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design an agent that selects and plays music based on real-world signals such as current weather conditions.

“I spent the first few minutes just trying to nail down scope, which was the right call but I probably overdid it.”

NVIDIA chip test engineer interview that was entirely project-based. The interviewer went deep on past work and wasn't interested in rehearsed answers at all. If you can't defend every decision you made on a project, you're going to struggle here.
  • On this project, what specifically was your responsibility versus the rest of the team?
  • Walk me through the technical approach you chose for this project and why.
  • What was the end result of the project? How did you measure success?
  • Did cost factor into your design or implementation decisions?
  • What are the weaknesses or limitations of what you built?
  • If you had more time or resources, how would you improve or optimize this project?

“This is where vague answers die.”

Interviewed for a PM role at Nvidia and got asked about product tradeoffs. Pretty short post but the question itself took some real thinking.
  • What tradeoffs did you consider on products you've worked on?

“I fumbled a bit at first because I tried to cover too many products at once.”

System design round at NVIDIA for a software engineer role, focused entirely on designing the control plane for a compute cluster. Pretty deep dive, multiple follow-ups that pushed into edge cases I hadn't fully thought through.
  • Design the control plane for a compute cluster: specifically how the central service tracks host state, what data store you'd use and why, and how you handle high write concurrency from 1,000+ hosts each sending heartbeats every few seconds.
  • How would you detect that a host has gone down, and how do you avoid false positives from a single missed heartbeat?
  • A network partition cuts off half the fleet from the central service. Those hosts are alive but appear down. How do you avoid a mass false-positive failure event and a thundering herd when the partition heals?
  • The scheduler needs to read free capacity and reserve it atomically to avoid two jobs landing in the same slot. How do you make that read-then-reserve operation safe without serializing all placement reads?
  • You need to add 30 days of per-host utilization history for capacity planning. How do you bolt that on without touching the hot heartbeat path?
  • A host's clock is skewed so its reported heartbeat timestamp looks stale or in the future. How do you make liveness detection robust to that?
  • How would you scale the central service itself to handle 10,000 hosts and eliminate it as a single point of failure?

“This was the core prompt and it's bigger than it sounds.”

NVIDIA software engineer coding round, just one question but it took up the whole session. The problem itself wasn't hard conceptually but getting the encoding scheme exactly right under pressure was annoying.
  • Design and implement an encode and decode function pair for a list of strings. The encoding format should store each string's length followed by the string itself and a delimiter character, and decoding must reconstruct the original list exactly.

“The scheme they wanted was length-prefix plus a separator, so something like '3foo#3lis#4jljl#' for ['foo','lis','jljl'].”
