Two Sigma Quant Engineer interview with a classic algorithmic problem. Nothing too wild but the greedy angle is easy to miss if you're not warmed up.
  • Given an array of non-negative integers where each value represents the furthest you can jump from that index, can you determine whether it's possible to reach the last index starting from index 0?

“My first instinct was BFS and I started coding it up before realizing that's way heavier than needed.”

Two Sigma phone screen, pretty much just one coding problem the whole time. The constraint of using a helper function instead of just parsing the strings made it trickier than it sounds on paper.
  • Given two non-negative numbers represented as strings, return their sum as a string. You must use a provided helper function that adds two single digits together and cannot convert the full strings to integers directly.

“My first instinct was to just parseInt both strings and add them, which is exactly what they said not to do.”

Two Sigma quant-style interview covering probability, linear algebra, and econometrics. The problems were layered, each part building on the last, and the regression bias derivation at the end was where things got real.
  • Given three zero-mean, unit-variance random variables with equal pairwise correlation p, what is the valid range of p?
  • Construct an explicit example of three such variables that achieves any valid p in that range.
  • Generalize the equal-correlation setup to n variables. What is the admissible range of p now?
  • In a linear regression where the true model includes regressors X and Z but you only regress y on X, derive the OLS estimator you get and characterize the omitted variable bias in matrix form.

“You need the joint covariance matrix to be positive semi-definite, so the determinant constraint gives you p >= -1/2.”

Two Sigma coding round, got a math-flavored array problem that looked approachable until I actually had to think about the direction of the sweep. Not a brutal interview but it required more careful reasoning than I expected for what seemed like a simple transformation task.
  • You're given a sorted integer array and three coefficients for a quadratic function. Apply the function to every element and return the results in sorted order. You need to do this in O(n) time.

“My first instinct was to just map and sort, which is O(n log n) and obviously not what they wanted.”

Two Sigma SWE interview that threw a full Huffman coding implementation at me. Not a toy problem, they wanted the whole thing: encoding, decoding, tie-breaking rules, edge cases. Took most of the session just to get through the logic cleanly.
  • Implement a Huffman-style binary encoding and decoding scheme for strings, including frequency counting, tree construction with deterministic tie-breaking, code assignment, and full encode/decode functions.

“This one is deceptively large for a single interview question.”

Two Sigma coding round, two algorithm problems back to back. Both were genuinely hard and required you to actually think about data structures rather than just pattern-match to a standard solution. Walked out unsure how I did.
  • Given k project slots, an initial capital amount, and arrays of required capital and profit for each project, implement a function that returns the maximum capital you can accumulate by greedily selecting up to k feasible projects. Justify your data structure choices and analyze time and space complexity.
  • You have a grid with a start cell, an exit cell, walls, and open cells. A separate matrix gives each cell a height. Cells flood at the minute equal to their height value. Moving one cell per minute starting at time 0, find the minimum time to reach the exit before it floods, or return -1 if it's impossible.

“The greedy angle clicked pretty fast: always pick the highest-profit project you can currently afford.”

Two Sigma research engineer interview with a meaty data analysis problem that blends stats, ML, and feature selection into one question. The kind of problem where you can tell they actually want to see how you think, not just whether you memorized a formula.
  • You're given historical temperature data for NYC and a bunch of small towns. How would you identify which town has the highest volatility, which is most similar to NYC, then use the towns' data to predict NYC temperatures (evaluated with MSE), and finally do greedy forward feature selection to pick the best subset of towns up to some specified count?

“This is basically four questions stitched together and they just kept going.”

Two Sigma coding screen, pretty much one algorithmic problem the whole time. Classic stock profit question but they wanted strict O(n) time and O(1) space so you couldn't just brute force it.
  • Given an array of daily stock prices, find the maximum profit from at most one buy-sell transaction. Return 0 if no profit is possible. Must run in O(n) time and O(1) space.

“I knew the answer pretty quickly, track the running minimum price and compare each day's price against it to update the max profit.”

Two Sigma quant engineer screen, heavy on stats fundamentals. Four questions, all math, no fluff. You need to know your formulas cold and be ready to explain why they work, not just compute the answer.
  • What is the valid range of the Pearson correlation coefficient, and what's the reasoning behind it?
  • Given a small matrix, calculate its determinant.
  • Find the eigenvalues of a given small matrix.
  • Given two vectors, compute the cosine similarity between them.

“Knew the range is -1 to 1 but fumbled a bit explaining why.”

Two Sigma software engineer round, one algorithmic problem the whole time. The problem itself was well-constructed and I can see why they like it, but I went in underprepared for the greedy heap approach and paid for it.
  • You have a startup with initial capital w and a list of n projects, each with a capital threshold and a profit. You can complete at most k projects (one at a time, in any order), and profit is added to your capital immediately after each project. Find the maximum capital you can end up with.

“My first instinct was brute force: at each step, scan all projects, pick the highest-profit one you can afford, repeat.”
