Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Meta PM interview, product analytics focus. Just the one question but it's the kind that sounds easy and then you realize you've been talking for five minutes and haven't actually said anything concrete yet.
  • What north star metric would you choose to track for Facebook Events, and why?

“I went straight to something like 'events attended per user' and felt pretty good about it until the follow-up poked holes in whether that actually captures value creation or just activity.”

Meta SWE coding round with a sliding window problem. Pretty standard stuff but the edge cases tripped me up more than I'd like to admit.
  • Given a string and an integer n, find the length of the shortest substring that contains exactly n distinct characters. Return -1 if no such substring exists.

“Sliding window was the right move and I knew it pretty quickly.”

Two coding problems in a Meta SWE round, both on the lighter side but the second one snuck up on me a bit. Classic Meta pairing format where they hit you with a follow-up once you finish the first.
  • Given a string defining a custom character ordering and a second string, rearrange the second string so its characters appear in the order defined by the first. Characters not in the ordering can go anywhere.
  • Given a word and an abbreviation string where digits represent skipped characters, determine if the abbreviation is valid. No leading zeros allowed, and non-digit characters must match exactly.

“Pretty approachable once you see it as a counting problem.”

Meta DS technical screen, one SQL problem the whole time. Pretty focused on a specific metrics definition scenario for a messaging product, nothing behavioral at all.
  • Given a calls table and a user daily status table, write a SQL query to find what percentage of today's active users in Great Britain made or received more than 50 calls in the previous 7 days (excluding today).

“The join logic is where I fumbled a bit.”

Meta SWE coding round, got a frequency-based array problem. Pretty standard stuff but worth knowing cold if you're interviewing there.
  • Given an integer array, return the k most frequent elements.

“Classic bucket sort or heap question.”

Meta PM interview, product design question about skill sharing. Pretty open-ended, which sounds fun until you're actually in it and realize there are about fifteen ways to go and no obvious right answer.
  • You're a PM at Meta. How would you design a product for skill sharing?

“I went broad too fast.”

Meta PM interview with a single product strategy question about entering the podcast space. Pretty open-ended, which sounds fun until you're actually sitting there trying to structure it.
  • If Meta wanted to enter the podcast space, what product would you build?

“I went straight to feature ideas and had to backtrack when I realized I hadn't grounded anything in why Meta specifically should do this.”

Meta SWE coding round with a log validation problem. Pretty straightforward premise but the edge cases are where it gets tricky.
  • Given a list of log entries as strings, write a function that returns false if the log sequence is invalid (e.g., duplicate starts without a matching end, or a sequence that doesn't properly close).

“My first instinct was to just track a boolean flag for whether we're 'inside' a session.”

Meta DS interview centered on a product analytics case for a hypothetical in-app video calling feature. Four connected questions building from need validation all the way to experiment design and engineering tradeoffs. Pretty intense for a single session.
  • You have full historical user and call data. How would you use it to determine whether users actually need an in-app video call feature before building anything?
  • After the feature launches, what success metrics and guardrail metrics would you track to evaluate whether it's actually working well?
  • Walk me through how you would design and run an A/B test for this video call feature, step by step.
  • What are the engineering tradeoffs of enforcing an automatic call termination policy, and how could that policy affect your experiment results?

“I went straight to usage patterns and started talking about proxy signals like how often users share links to third-party video tools inside the app.”

Meta coding screen, pretty much just the classic interval merging problem. Nothing fancy, no behavioral, just code it up and explain your thinking.
  • Given an array of intervals, merge all overlapping ones and return the resulting non-overlapping set.

“Sort by start time first, that part came to me quick.”
